Angelina Booan Aces Spyglass Hill After Vaughn Taylor Lesson

Angelina Booan, a 17-year-old playing in the First Tee Division at the PURE Insurance Championship, made the first hole-in-one of her career on Saturday at Spyglass Hill Golf Course — less than two hours after a swing lesson from her PGA Tour Champions playing partner, Vaughn Taylor.

How did the lesson come together?

Taylor, who had been paired with Booan during Friday's opening round, texted her Saturday morning to invite her to join him on the range before his second round. The two spent 90 minutes working through fixes, starting with cleaning the grooves of her irons before each swing and releasing the putter head through her stroke. From there they moved to Booan's full swing, shortening a backswing that had grown too long on her irons and wedges.

Booan had expected only a few minutes of tips before Taylor headed into his own round; instead, the session ran an hour and a half.

What happened on the 12th hole?

The pair reached the par-3 12th at Spyglass Hill, a hole Booan played at 117 yards to account for the wind. She pulled her pitching wedge, cleaned the grooves as Taylor had shown her, and watched the ball land near the hole and spin back into the cup for an ace — her first.

Why did Vaughn Taylor give up practice time for a lesson?

The PURE Insurance Championship pairs PGA Tour Champions pros with junior golfers from the First Tee program, but players are under no obligation to coach their partners beyond the pro-am format. Taylor said he had spent Friday quietly cataloging swing tips for Booan before deciding to offer the lesson.

"I was her once. We were all junior golfers at one time."

Taylor also credited the time with Booan for settling his own game. He went on to finish the week at 7 under par, good for a tie for ninth — his best result in months.

Taylor said working with Booan pulled his focus away from a rough recent stretch, and that the distraction seemed to help his own scoring.
