Elevating the Cognizant Classic: PGA Tour’s Commitment to Success and Community Impact
Staff Writer

A New Era for the Event
The PGA Tour Championship Management division, responsible for overseeing the Tour’s biggest events, stepped in to take control of the former Honda Classic, which was previously managed by IMG. The division ensured the event’s continuity and signed a six-year deal with Cognizant as the new title sponsor. Their goal is to elevate the Cognizant Classic to the level of other marquee tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule.
The PGA Tour’s commitment to the event’s success extends beyond the course itself. It aims to ensure that the charitable beneficiaries, such as the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, continue to receive the necessary funds. The Tour recognized that managing the event directly was crucial in achieving these objectives.
The Pioneers of Event Management
Under the guidance of the PGA Tour Championship Management division, known for successfully organizing prestigious events like the Presidents Cup, Tour Championship, Players Championship, Sentry, and St. Jude Championship, the Cognizant Classic is expected to evolve and attract larger audiences.
The division consists of experts in various fields, including ticketing, marketing, operations, tournament services, and sales. Drawing from their extensive experience, they will work collaboratively to enhance the overall tournament experience for both players and spectators.
Continuous Innovation and Enhancements
PGA National, the venue for the Cognizant Classic, has a rich history of hosting groundbreaking golf tournaments. The Players Championship, for example, introduced several innovative elements, such as the first stadium course, electronic scoreboards, video boards, and an active Twitter presence. The PGA Tour Championship Management division aims to build upon this legacy and implement further improvements.
While many of these enhancements may not be immediately visible during this year’s tournament, next year’s edition promises a dramatically different experience. By leveraging their expertise, the division will create a golf extravaganza like no other.
The Importance of Engaged Sponsorship
Cognizant’s commitment to being the title sponsor is essential for the long-term success of the Cognizant Classic. While short-term solutions can bring temporary relief, the PGA Tour understood the need for a multi-year, multi-million dollar commitment to ensure sustained success.
Prior to the PGA Tour taking control, IMG managed the event on behalf of Children Health Care Charities. IMG continues to be involved but reports to the Tour. Although the tournament experienced growth in attendance and charitable contributions under IMG’s management, the field suffered due to the scheduling challenges determined by the Tour.
A Promising Future
Since the PGA Tour assumed control of the event, there has been a noticeable improvement in the field’s caliber. Adjusting the schedule by adding a week between the end of the West Coast Swing and the start of the Florida Swing has played a significant role in attracting top players.
Looking towards the future, Joie Chitwood, interim executive director of Cognizant for 2024, expressed optimism for the event’s continued growth. With Todd Fleming taking over as executive director in subsequent years, Chitwood believes that the Cognizant Classic will become an even more thrilling and dynamic stop on the PGA Tour schedule.
Tom D’Angelo, a renowned sports columnist and reporter at The Palm Beach Post, provides valuable insights into the transformation and highlights the exciting journey that lies ahead for the Cognizant Classic and the Palm Beach Gardens community as a whole.
