South Australian treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said this week that a 2027 LIV Golf Adelaide event is "looking unlikely," the first public doubt raised by an official involved with the tournament's future there.

Why is the 2027 LIV Golf Adelaide event in doubt?

Kooyonga Golf Club, set to replace longtime host The Grange while a new course is built there, has filed a motion in U.S. bankruptcy court asking for a decision by Nov. 6 on whether next year's event will go ahead and who would play in it. The filing adds to a stack of deadlines facing LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil, who is separately working to close an investment deal with BC Partners that depends on enough top players signing on by around Oct. 13.

South Australia and LIV Golf have a contract to host an event through 2031, but it remains unclear how that agreement carries over if the league restructures coming out of bankruptcy under a planned "LIV Golf 2.0" format reported at 10 events.

Kooyonga is asking the same question everyone around LIV Golf is asking: what happens after the bankruptcy, and when.

Koutsantonis said Kooyonga was within its rights to press for answers. "Kooyonga is right to be asking these questions of LIV about whether it will be staged, what would it look like, who's coming," he said, adding that LIV has to answer them.

This year's Adelaide event drew more than 100,000 spectators, among the largest crowds on the LIV Golf calendar. Koutsantonis said the state is also working to bring the DP World Tour- and PGA Tour-backed Australian Open to South Australia over the next six years as a potential replacement if the LIV date does not return.

What happens next?

LIV Golf faces its BC Partners funding deadline in mid-October, roughly three weeks before Kooyonga's Nov. 6 cutoff for word on the Adelaide event. Players including Jon Rahm and Australian Cameron Smith have not committed to the league beyond this year while the restructuring is unresolved.
