Martin Trainer’s Fate in LIV Golf Promotions Event

In recent months, professional golfer Martin Trainer took a calculated risk by participating in the LIV Golf Promotions events.
Despite potential consequences, Trainer decided to seize the opportunity and compete in the tournament.

“We’ll see what happens,” Trainer commented apprehensively. “They might fine me.”

By ‘they,’ Trainer refers to the PGA Tour, the governing body responsible for administering professional golf events. The PGA Tour originally
did not categorize LIV Golf Promotions as an “unauthorized tournament” due to its status as a qualifying event. However, an important requirement
made several players hesitate – the necessity for a media release issued by the Tour. Members still needed to apply for and receive media
releases by specific deadlines: 15 days in advance for Korn Ferry Tour players and 45 days in advance for PGA Tour players. Despite the LIV
Golf Promotions being announced in February, the official announcement occurred later on October 26, which was less than 45 days before the
first round on December 8.

“It was a strange situation because I was trying to keep my card and then I didn’t, weighing options, and so that’s how I got stuck in that
pickle,” Trainer explained. “I don’t think it will result in a suspension, probably just a fine.”

So, why did Trainer take the risk?

“It was simply an opportunity,” stated Trainer, who emerged victorious in the 2019 Puerto Rico Open. As a 32-year-old professional finishing
178th in the FedEx Cup rankings this season, he is currently participating in the PGA Tour Q-School. “I have a bit of status on the Korn
Ferry Tour, and I’ll have entry into a few PGA Tour events. Additionally, I can also compete in some European Tour events. In conjunction
with this week, it presented two chances for me to strive for full status on a major tour.”

Unfortunately, Trainer failed to secure one of the three available spots on LIV Golf in Abu Dhabi. To attain a top-five finish at Q-School,
he will need a remarkable final round performance. After shooting a 72 on Saturday, he currently sits T-54 at even-par 210.

This setback, however, hasn’t deterred Trainer. Despite experiencing numerous challenges throughout his career, including missing 23 cuts
in 28 starts on Tour, Trainer believes he is on the cusp of a turning point in his game. While he remains determined to continue pursuing
his professional golfing career, he has also contemplated an alternative path.

“I don’t want to struggle on the mini tours,” expressed Trainer in an interview with NCGA Golf. “If I can’t make it on Tour, I want to return
to school and become a therapist.” He clarifies that it’s not sports psychology he’s interested in, but rather the broader field of therapeutic
counseling. “I find the human condition and human challenges much more fascinating,” Trainer elaborated. Reflecting on his tumultuous career,
he chuckled and added, “Obviously, there is plenty to analyze within myself.”
