Unlike a normal PGA Tour event, the Presidents Cup carries no prize purse. But players at Medinah Country Club this week are still getting paid, through a stipend system the PGA Tour has run since 2022.

Each of the 12 players on the U.S. and International teams receives a $250,000 stipend to help cover travel and accommodation. Captains and each team's four vice-captains are paid the same amount, bringing each team's total to $4.25 million. This is the third Presidents Cup paid at this level, taking the total since 2022 to $25.5 million. Before that, players could direct a smaller sum, $150,000 of a $5.1 million pool, to charity.

How does that compare with the Ryder Cup?

At the most recent Ryder Cup, the PGA of America paid each U.S. player $500,000 for the first time, split between a $200,000 stipend and a $300,000 charitable donation; players reportedly donated their full amount. Team Europe, run separately by Ryder Cup Europe, received no payment and has said it won't introduce one.

The Presidents Cup has no prize purse, but its players are far from unpaid.

Because both Presidents Cup teams are effectively run by the PGA Tour, the event follows its own pay structure. The Tour says the competition's first 10 editions, dating to 1994, raised more than $32 million for charity.
