Sergio Garcia Asks Bankruptcy Court to Void LIV Golf Contract

Sergio Garcia has asked a bankruptcy court to officially terminate his LIV Golf contract, arguing in new filings that the deal's uncertain status is already hurting his ability to sign with another tour or line up sponsors.

Why Is Garcia Pushing to End the Deal Now?

LIV Golf entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of a restructuring into a planned "LIV Golf 2.0," a process expected to void existing player contracts. Garcia's legal team does not dispute that his deal is headed for cancellation. But they argue the current limbo, where the contract is likely to be voided but has not been officially closed out, is doing damage in the meantime.

What Do the Filings Say?

According to the court documents, first reported by the Financial Times, Garcia is asking either for an order confirming the agreement is terminated or for permission to end it himself. The filing argues that tournament organizers, sponsors and other tours "may hesitate before dealing with Garcia" while the contract remains on the books, and that the uncertainty is especially costly for an athlete whose schedule and sponsorships must be planned well in advance.

LIV sources told Golf Monthly that such requests for court clarification are routine in Chapter 11 cases, and that the ultimate decision rests with the court rather than LIV itself.

What Else Is Moving in LIV's Bankruptcy Case?

Garcia's filing follows a similar move by Kooyonga Golf Club, the planned host of LIV Golf Adelaide, which has also gone to court seeking clarity on whether that 2027 event will proceed. Since LIV's bankruptcy filing, multiple players have been reported weighing alternatives, including DP World Tour events, Q-School and the Asian Tour, while others have said they would return for LIV 2.0 if it launches. LIV CEO Scott O'Neil is separately working to sign enough players to close a planned investment from BC Partners that would fund the new structure.

No ruling has been issued on Garcia's request, and his future tour status remains tied to the broader bankruptcy proceedings.
