Stomach Bug Hits US Walker Cup Team; Alternate on Standby

Two days before the Walker Cup began at Lahinch, U.S. captain Nathan Smith confirmed several American players had dealt with stomach illness, though he said all would be ready to compete Saturday.

Golf Channel's Brentley Romine reported Thursday that multiple U.S. players were fighting stomach issues, with Ethan Feng and William Jennings skipping practice and three players missing that night's team banquet. At a Friday press conference, Smith said every player would be ready for the opening session.

As a precaution, the U.S. team contacted first alternate Max Herendeen, who remained on standby but did not travel to Ireland. "The guys are ready to go," Smith said. He added that he would want an alternate on-site for future editions.

The illness recalls the Walker Cup five years ago at Seminole Golf Club, where both teams needed alternates because of a stomach bug. Smith said this year's version was far milder, fading within a day or two and leaving the players rested for the weekend.

What is the Walker Cup format?

Saturday and Sunday mornings each feature four alternate-shot foursomes matches. Saturday afternoon has eight singles matches, and all 10 players on each side compete in singles Sunday afternoon.

The 51st Walker Cup begins Saturday at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland.
