Traveling with a Family on the PGA Tour: Thomas Detry’s Unique Experience

As a 31-year-old PGA Tour pro, Thomas Detry knows the ins and outs of traveling efficiently. Currently in his second season on the PGA Tour, Detry, a Belgian native, calls Dubai his home, but he has yet to establish a permanent base in the U.S. In a recent interview on Subpar with hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz, Detry shed light on what it’s like to compete on the PGA Tour with a family in tow and no fixed place to live.

Detry shared, “Right now, we’re living out of a suitcase. We’re pretty much living week by week. I have my wife and kids traveling with me as well, so it’s not that easy. But we make sure to find great houses to stay in. However, it all happened pretty quickly.”

Having obtained his PGA Tour card in summer 2022 and relocating to Dubai in 2021, Detry found himself faced with the challenge of spending nearly nine months of the year in the U.S. With uncertainty about a permanent residence, he explained, “We’re currently in a transition period. We’re trying to figure things out. Where would be a good place to call home? Scottsdale is amazing, although a little far from home. Florida is definitely an option, and we’ve also considered the Caribbean. However, accessibility can be an issue.”

Detry mentioned that having a place to stay in London, where his wife is from, provides some solace but doesn’t solve the U.S.-based dilemma. Reflecting on his future plans, he noted, “Next year is the year where we’ll definitely commit to something.”
