US Ryder Cup Team Drops Carryover Points for 2027 Qualifying

The PGA of America overhauled its U.S. Ryder Cup qualifying system on Wednesday, eliminating the practice of counting points earned in the year before the matches as the Americans try to win on European soil for the first time since 1993.

What is changing?

Under the previous system, U.S. players earned points from money won both in the Ryder Cup year and in select marquee events from the prior year; last cycle, for example, players were credited for the 2024 majors and Players Championship. The new system counts only the 2027 season, running from the PGA Tour's American Express (Jan. 21-24) through the BMW Championship (Aug. 19-22), with points awarded across 31 events.

Winners of Signature and playoff events will earn 2,250 points, while winners of standard 2027 PGA Tour events earn 1,500. Points for the Zurich Classic team event require both partners to be U.S.-eligible, and opposite-field events will not award points. Making the cut and finishing a tournament will also earn points on a separate scale.

Why make the change?

Furyk said in a PGA of America release that the new system reflects an emphasis on current form over the eight-month qualifying window rather than career earnings. He had previously told reporters that prize money across golf has shifted enough in recent years that a fresh method was needed to identify the strongest team.

The new system rewards a full season of 2027 form rather than money banked the year before.

Furyk's six captain's picks remain unchanged and will be announced the week of Aug. 30, 2027. A points ranking does not guarantee selection; players must still meet eligibility requirements. The matches are scheduled for Sept. 17-19, 2027, at Adare Manor in Ireland. Europe's selection process for the event began two weeks before the U.S. announcement.
