Wyndham Clark Posted Tour's Top Approach-Game Gain in 2026

With the 2026 PGA Tour season complete, Golfweek's statistical review found that Wyndham Clark made the biggest year-over-year improvement of any player in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green, the third installment in a series that already covered driving and putting.

Clark's putting got most of the credit for his hot stretch and U.S. Open win at Shinnecock after he switched putters mid-season, but the numbers show his iron play improved the most of anyone on Tour. Davis Thompson, Tom Kim and Matt Fitzpatrick also posted notable gains, each moving from a touch better than Tour average into the category's elite tier.

Why does approach play matter so much to earnings?

Golfweek's data draws a direct line between approach-game quality and prize money. The top 25 players in Strokes Gained: Approach combined for median earnings of roughly $5.22 million last season.

Ten of the top 25 players in the category also finished in the top 25 on the money list, while none of the bottom 25 did. The correlation was not absolute: Chris Gotterup, one of roughly ten players who earned close to $10 million last season, ranked just 53rd in Strokes Gained: Approach at 0.235, the lowest mark among that group of top earners.

Iron play travels in a way that a hot putter doesn't always repeat.
