3 Clubs Amateur Data Says Can Replace Your Long Irons

Three clubs consistently outperform what most amateurs carry in their bag for long approach shots, according to tracking data from Arccos and Shot Scope: a 7-wood, a hybrid in place of long irons, and, to a lesser extent, a chipper. The selection criteria here is simple — independent, published shot-tracking data comparing each club against the alternative most golfers already carry.

Why do long irons give amateurs trouble?

Most amateurs don't struggle to generate speed with a 4-iron; they struggle to get it airborne. A thin strike with a long iron runs along the ground rather than climbing. Clubs with a lower center of gravity, a wider sole and more loft solve that problem through design rather than swing changes.

The hybrid

Arccos analyzed more than 200 million shots across 3.8 million rounds in a 2020 study comparing the 4-iron with the 4-hybrid. The 4-hybrid hit more greens in regulation in every handicap bracket, and Arccos reported that every bracket also scored lower when using the 4-hybrid off the tee. Shot Scope's newer 2026 data, reported by Golf Monthly, shows the same pattern from 175 yards: a 20-handicap golfer hits the green 14% of the time with a hybrid compared with 8% with a long iron. Only scratch players fared better with the iron; Arccos found 0-5 handicaps hit 43.5% of fairways with the hybrid versus 46.2% with the 4-iron, giving elite players a reason to keep it.

The 7-wood

Scottie Scheffler carried a TaylorMade Qi35 7-wood bent to 20 degrees at the 2025 PGA Championship, using it to launch 1.5 degrees higher and spin 1,500 rpm more than his 3-iron while carrying 240 yards. He hit it into the par-5 10th during the final round, setting up the birdie that put him in the lead for good. "You have to be able to land the ball up on the green," Scheffler said. MyGolfSpy lists the typical 7-wood loft at 20 to 23 degrees, with 21 the most common, and Shot Scope data shows a 15-handicap carrying it 180 to 195 yards, a 25-handicap 165 to 180 yards, and a scratch player 215 to 225 yards.

The chipper

A chipper carries the loft of a mid-iron but is built and swung like a putter. The Ping ChipR has 38.5 degrees of loft and a 35-inch, putter-length shaft, according to MyGolfSpy, while Golf Monthly lists the Odyssey chipper at about 37 degrees. When MyGolfSpy tested the ChipR in 2022 against seven golfers' own clubs, spanning handicaps 1.0 to 15.0, 55% of testers got closer to the hole from the fringe, with an average gain of one inch. Fewer testers benefited from the rough, and from a bunker the club made cleaner contact but lacked the loft to hold the green.

The hybrid and the 7-wood have the shot-tracking data behind them. The chipper, tested against real clubs, produced a one-inch edge.

How do these clubs fit in a 14-club bag?

The Rules of Golf cap a set at 14 clubs; carrying a 15th costs two strokes per hole it's used, up to four strokes a round in stroke play, or the loss of a hole per breach, up to two, in match play. A chipper must also conform as a putter under Equipment Rule 2.1a, which limits putters to 10 degrees of loft — a two-sided chipper does not conform and using one in competition can result in disqualification.
