David Puig played Tuesday's practice round at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship without any Fireballs GC branding, wearing a Titleist beanie and an unbranded jumper on the Old Course at St Andrews instead of his LIV Golf team's colors.

Why does a beanie matter for a LIV Golf player?

LIV players are contractually required to wear their team's apparel, even at non-LIV tournaments. Puig, who turned professional when he joined LIV in 2022 and moved from Torque GC to Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC, has worn his team's gear at every other start this season, including two weeks ago at the BMW PGA Championship. The switch in Scotland has not been explained or confirmed by Puig or LIV Golf.

The sighting comes as LIV Golf's ownership situation remains unsettled. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund pulled its funding from the league earlier this year, and while CEO Scott O'Neil has lined up new investors, LIV is reportedly reinstating fines and suspensions for players who compete in conflicting events, squeezing those trying to play both LIV and the DP World Tour. Puig has been a DP World Tour member since the start of the 2026 season.

Has this happened with other LIV players?

Puig is not the only LIV golfer to appear without team branding recently. Peter Uihlein, of Range Goats GC, wore an unbranded Titleist cap at an Asian Tour event earlier this month. Eugenio Chacarra, who left LIV in 2024, has since built a career on the DP World Tour that has him third in the Race to Dubai standings with two wins this season. Reflecting on his LIV exit, Chacarra said his "life didn't really change besides money" after winning on the circuit.

Puig's Fireballs GC teammates Jose Luis Ballester and Luis Masaveu have already advanced through the second round of DP World Tour Q-School, joined by American Michael La Sasso. All three, like Puig, are under the age of 23.
