Jake Knapp underwent surgery this week to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, closing out an injury-disrupted season that ended with him just short of the Tour Championship.

Knapp confirmed the procedure in a social media post, writing that it was successful and thanking the medical team who performed it. He gave no timetable for his return to competition.

How did the injury affect his season?

Knapp's thumb first became a problem in March, when he withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational shortly before his opening tee time. He kept playing through the spring, missing the cut at The Players Championship but posting a tie for sixth at the Houston Open and a tie for 11th at the Masters. A poor finish at the RBC Heritage followed, then further withdrawals from the Cadillac Championship, the Truist Championship and the PGA Championship.

He returned at the US Open in June after a two-month layoff but missed four cuts in his next six starts. A tie for 13th at the 3M Open was enough to book his place in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and he backed it up with a tie for seventh at the FedEx St. Jude Championship before a tie for 41st at the BMW Championship closed out his year.

What's next for Knapp?

The 32-year-old finished 38th in the final FedEx Cup standings, outside the top 30 who advanced to the Tour Championship. He has already locked up his PGA Tour card for next season and a spot in the Signature Events through his top-50 finish, and it remains unclear whether he will play in any of the eight FedEx Cup Fall Series events, which run from September 17 through the RSM Classic on November 19-22.
