Manuel Elvira's Runner-Up Finish Boosts World Ranking by 100 Spots

Manuel Elvira closed the BMW PGA Championship with a double bogey on the 18th hole at Wentworth, handing JJ Spaun a two-shot victory, but the Spaniard's runner-up finish still delivered the best ranking week of his career.

What happened on the 18th hole?

Elvira made eagle on the par-5 17th to put himself in position to win, then hit iron off the tee on the par-5 18th and laid up short of the green. His approach from the fairway found a bunker on the left, his recovery came up short of the putting surface, and he duffed the following chip into a greenside bunker. The double bogey seven dropped him into a tie for second, one shot behind Spaun, who had birdied four of his final five holes.

Elvira called the finish devastating, but said afterward: "It's been a great week and I'm really glad for it."

How much did Elvira earn and gain in the rankings?

The runner-up finish was worth more than €520,000, short of the €1.3 million paid to Spaun, but it moved Elvira up more than 100 spots in the Official World Golf Ranking, his largest single-week gain in ranking points. He also rose 50 places in the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai standings, to 33rd, putting him in position to reach the season-ending playoffs.

Elvira is the younger brother of three-time DP World Tour winner Nacho Elvira, who followed the final round at Wentworth in person.
