McIlroy-Chacarra Pairing Headlines Abu Dhabi Aldar Opener

Rory McIlroy, Eugenio Chacarra and Patrick Reed will play together in the final tee time of round one at the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship, the opening event of the DP World Tour's season-ending Play-offs at Yas Links.

Why are McIlroy and Chacarra grouped together?

McIlroy enters the three-event Play-offs trailing Chacarra atop the Race to Dubai standings. The order for Thursday's opening round is set by reversing that ranking, so players furthest back in the standings start earliest and the leader goes out last. Grouping the two together puts McIlroy in direct view of the gap he is trying to close before the Play-offs conclude.

Jon Rahm is also in the field this week, making his first competitive start since explaining his decision to turn down LIV Golf's revamped "2.0" format. Tommy Fleetwood returns looking to go one better than last year, when he lost a playoff to defending champion Aaron Rai at the same event. Adam Scott and Tyrrell Hatton have also entered the tournament.

What is at stake at the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship?

The event is the first of three Play-off tournaments that will determine this year's Race to Dubai champion, with points earned across all three counting toward the final standings. Chacarra's cushion at the top means a strong week from McIlroy would immediately tighten the race.
