McIlroy defends soaring PGA Tour prize money as market-driven

Rory McIlroy pushed back on the idea that PGA Tour prize money has grown out of control, telling reporters at Bellerive Country Club on Wednesday that skyrocketing purses simply reflect what sponsors are willing to pay.

What did McIlroy say about prize money?

Asked ahead of the BMW Championship whether purses had gotten too large, McIlroy offered an immediate defense rooted in supply and demand. He said sponsors see enough value in title sponsorships to keep funding them, and that the money follows naturally from what companies are willing to spend on the sport.

If someone is willing to pay that, then that's the market value.

McIlroy argued that Tour sponsors are stepping up because they see a return on the investment, not because purses have been inflated arbitrarily.

How much have Masters winnings grown?

McIlroy's own history at Augusta National traces the purse growth. Charl Schwartzel earned $1.44 million for winning the 2011 Masters, the year McIlroy led by four shots before a final-round 80 dropped him to a tie for 15th. McIlroy's runner-up check in 2022, $1.62 million, already topped Schwartzel's winning total from 11 years earlier, while Scheffler collected a then-record $2.7 million for that year's title. McIlroy's own 2026 Masters victory paid $4.5 million.

Why has PGA Tour prize money increased so much?

McIlroy traced the broader purse inflation to LIV Golf's arrival in 2022, when the rival league offered players enormous guaranteed money and $4 million winner's shares. The PGA Tour and the majors responded by raising their own purses, both to compete with LIV's paydays and to keep top players from leaving. Signature Events on Tour now typically pay $3.6 million to winners, and Cameron Young collected $4.5 million for winning the 2026 Players Championship.

McIlroy also said he believes prize money should remain part of the incentive structure for the Tour's planned postseason changes, joking that today's pros are not amateur-era stars playing for nothing. At the same time, he argued purses should not be the sole focus of tournament coverage, suggesting the Tour lean more on individual events' histories, like the BMW Championship's roots as the Western Open, rather than leading with sponsor dollars.
