PGA of America Sets New Points System for 2027 Ryder Cup Team

The PGA of America unveiled a new qualifying system for the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup team on Wednesday, replacing money-based rankings with a points structure spread across 31 tournaments in the 2027 season.

How will players qualify for the 2027 team?

Points begin accruing at The American Express, Jan. 18-24, 2027, and run through the BMW Championship, Aug. 16-22, 2027. The qualifying field spans the four major championships, the Players Championship, eight PGA Tour Signature events, two Tour Championship playoff events and 16 full-field events. Every American who makes the cut in those events earns a share of points by finish position, and 2026 major results will not count.

The top six players on the list after the BMW Championship qualify automatically. Furyk then names six captain's picks the week of Aug. 30, after the Tour Championship. Points ranking alone does not guarantee a spot; players must also meet separate eligibility rules.

Why did the PGA of America change the formula?

Furyk pointed to the widening gap between PGA Tour Signature events, with purses topping $20 million, and full-field events worth roughly half that. "We realize we have a problem. Right now everything is working off of money," he said in May. "We need to come up with a fair assessment of how to identify those six players."

A qualifying system built on prize money had rewarded players for choosing the richest tournaments, not for playing the best golf.

Where is the 2027 Ryder Cup?

The 46th Ryder Cup will be played at Adare Manor in Ireland, Sept. 17-19, 2027. The U.S. has not won on foreign soil since 1993.
