PGA Tour cuts exempt status to the top 100 as card routes narrow

The PGA Tour removed 35 guaranteed cards from its 2026 pathway, and it did it across three of the four main entry routes at once. Exempt status contracted from the top 125 to the top 100, Korn Ferry Tour graduations fell from 30 to 20, and Q-School eliminated ties. Roughly a fifth of the front door is gone.

Players finishing 101st to 150th now receive conditional status spread across three tiered priority brackets rather than a full card. Open qualifying spots were trimmed across the calendar as well, so the number of ways to play your way in has shrunk alongside the number of cards.

Who does this hit hardest?

Anyone whose route to America runs through a developmental tour, which in practice means the international contingent. An Australian professional grinding through a season is now competing for two-thirds of the graduation cards that existed a year ago, which pushes the DP World Tour pathway and co-sanctioned domestic events from useful to essential.

What is happening in Australia instead?

The domestic schedule is expanding its international co-sanctioning as the American door narrows. The BMW Australian PGA Championship moves to The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney for 26 to 29 November, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia, with the New South Wales Government confirming the venue in April.

Two separate anniversaries get conflated in coverage of that move. The championship has not been staged in New South Wales since 1998, when David Howell won it at New South Wales Golf Club, a 28-year gap. The Lakes itself has not hosted since 1987, which is 39 years. Royal Queensland in Brisbane, which held the event from 2022 to 2025, steps aside while it is redesigned and fully returfed ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games.
