The PGA Tour is nearing a sponsorship agreement with Visa that would include backing for the tour's revamped Tour Championship, Sports Business Journal reported Thursday, citing reporter Josh Carpenter.
What would the Visa deal include?
The reported agreement, described as an annual figure "in the high eight figures," would make Visa an official marketing partner of the PGA Tour starting in 2027. Visa would then take over sponsorship of the Tour Championship beginning in 2028, along with naming rights for three events on the tour's new Challenger Series. Neither the PGA Tour nor Visa has commented publicly on the reported talks.
Why is the Tour Championship getting a new sponsor?
FedEx's title sponsorship of the Tour Championship ended this year after two decades, as commissioner Brian Rolapp reshapes the tour's commercial deals ahead of a broader overhaul starting in 2028. That overhaul includes converting the season-ending Tour Championship into a matchplay event staged across multiple courses, with organizers reportedly favoring several sponsors over a single title backer.
The restructured PGA Tour will split the season into a 120-player Championship Series and a second-tier Challenger Series, with 13 of the Challenger Series' 20 events running alongside Championship Series tournaments. A package deal spanning both tiers, of the kind reportedly under discussion with Visa, would give the tour a way to sell sponsorships for its lower-profile events.
