Putter, 7-Iron or Hybrid: How to Choose From the Fringe

Golfers facing a shot just off the green often default to the putter, but a putter is not always the best option. The right choice from the fringe comes down to how much ground the ball needs to cover and how the lie plays.

When should you putt from the fringe?

A putter is the safest option on shorter fringe shots, since it keeps the ball on the ground and rolling on a predictable line. It gets harder to trust from 50 feet or more, when generating enough speed with a putting stroke becomes difficult.

When does a 7-iron work better?

A mid-iron like a 7-iron can "bump" the ball onto the green, but it comes off the face faster than a putt, so the stroke needs a shorter, more controlled motion to match. It suits shots where a small amount of carry is needed before the ball releases toward the hole.

Why use a hybrid from the fringe?

A hybrid produces more speed off the face than either option, letting a golfer make a smaller motion while still covering plenty of ground. That makes it well suited to long or uphill fringe shots where a full-length putting or chipping stroke would be hard to control.

The clearest way to find the right club is to hit the same fringe shot with a putter, a 7-iron and a hybrid and compare how far each backswing needs to travel to reach the hole.
