The Solheim Cup has been played 19 times since its 1990 debut, with the United States holding an 11-7-1 edge over Europe in the all-time series. Here is how each edition of the biennial women's team event has played out.

How did the event start?

Both teams fielded eight players for the inaugural 1990 Solheim Cup, and the Americans dominated all three sessions to win 11.5-4.5, with Pat Bradley routing Trish Johnson 8 and 7 and Beth Daniel beating Liselotte Neumann 7 and 6. Europe broke through for its first win in 1992 after the teams were expanded to eight players each, closing out the Sunday singles session 7-3. The Americans reclaimed the Cup in 1994 after a 5-5 tie entering the final day, winning eight of the next nine matches.

When did the format last change?

The event grew to 12 players and 28 points in 1996, a format that has held since. The U.S. won that year by taking 10 of 12 Sunday points to retain the Cup, then won again in 1998 by a comfortable 16-12 scoreline as captain's picks were introduced for the first time. Europe reclaimed the Cup in 2000 after trailing 9.5-4.5 entering Sunday, when Carin Koch clinched the win 2 and 1.

Which editions were the most lopsided?

Europe's 17.5-10.5 win in 2003 and 18-10 win in 2013 stand as the two largest margins in Solheim Cup history. The 2013 match was also the first time Europe won on U.S. soil, and it featured the first hole-in-one in event history, from Anna Nordqvist. In between, the U.S. won 15.5-12.5 in both 2002 and 2005, and 16-12 in both 2007 and 2009, the latter completing a three-peat behind a rookie Michelle Wie, who earned 3.5 points.

What was the biggest comeback?

The 2015 U.S. team trailed 10-6 after four sessions before winning 8.5 of the final 12 points to reclaim the Cup, the largest comeback in the event's history, capped by a winning putt from Paula Creamer. The U.S. followed with a second straight win in 2017, sweeping an afternoon four-ball session so thoroughly that no European pairing ever led, then rolling through the rest of the matches.

How did Europe last win back the Cup?

Europe's most recent victories came in 2019, 2021 and the 2023 tie. In 2019, the match was tied at 8 entering Sunday singles before Europe won the final three matches to win the session 6.5-5.5 and claim the Cup for the first time since 2013. Rookie Leona Maguire was the standout of Europe's 2021 win in Toledo, beating Jennifer Kupcho 5 and 4 in singles and finishing as one of five Europeans to score more than two points. In 2023, the match came down to Carlota Ciganda's birdie on the 16th hole, delivered after her longtime friend Suzann Pettersen turned the moment over to her; the tie meant Europe, as the reigning champion, retained the Cup.

How did the U.S. reclaim the Cup in 2024?

Rose Zhang and Megan Khang combined to win seven of Team USA's 15.5 points in 2024, the Americans' first win in seven years. Zhang went 4-0-0 for the week, becoming just the eighth player and third American to finish 4-0-0 or better in Solheim Cup history, while Lauren Coughlin added a 3-0-1 record.
