Young, Gotterup Sweep Saturday to Keep US in Presidents Cup Hunt

After the U.S. team was swept on Friday at the Presidents Cup, Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup supplied the lone bright spot of Saturday at Medinah, winning both of their matches to keep the Americans within reach ahead of Sunday singles.

How did Young and Gotterup perform Saturday?

The pair opened the day against Nick Taylor and Corey Conners, who had beaten Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns in Friday's foursomes. Young and Gotterup held them off 2 and 1. In the afternoon foursomes session, they were even more dominant, closing out Adam Scott and Sungjae Im 6 and 4.

Why does the pairing work?

Young and Gotterup already knew each other's games before Medinah. Both are regular playing partners at home and both hail from the Northeast, a shared background they said helped settle their nerves in alternate shot. Their length off the tee is also similar: Gotterup ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in driving distance and Young 14th, leaving them in comparable spots on the course all day.

"We play similar styles of golf," Gotterup said.

That similarity mattered most in foursomes, where a wayward tee shot leaves a partner to recover. Young credited Gotterup with steadying him after an opening tee shot went out of bounds Saturday morning, and both said they trusted each other to scramble when needed.

The U.S. had gone winless on Friday before the pairing's sweep. The team will need more performances like it in Sunday's singles matches to complete a comeback at Medinah.
