The longest of Tucson's five municipal courses and the oldest, opened in 1925 on land the railroad tycoon Epes Randolph left the city on condition it stay parkland. For its first decade golfers played sand fairways and cottonseed greens sprayed with oil to stop them blowing away, and raked the greens after putting out. William P. Bell — Bel-Air, the Biltmore's Adobe course — grassed it in 1936 with labour from a New Deal program, sleeping on the clubhouse floor during construction. It hosted the Tucson Open from 1979 to 1983, the Seiko Tucson Match Play through 1986, and the LPGA's Welch's/Fry's Championship until 2002, where Annika Sörenstam won twice. Parkland rather than desert: mature oaks, pines and palms line parallel fairways, and water is in play on five holes. It runs 6,902 yards from the back tees. With the adjoining Dell Urich it is the second-most played public golf complex in the United States, behind only Torrey Pines.
