Key takeaways

  • Callaway ended its partnership with Good Good effective immediately, three years after the deal began in 2023.
  • The company is committing $1 million to organizations that prevent violence against women and support survivors.
  • The split follows an Aug. 21 driver ad in which Good Good's Garrett Clark shoved fellow creator Alexis Miestowski to the ground.
  • Dick's Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy and PGA Tour Superstore have all pulled Good Good merchandise from their stores.
  • Golf Channel delayed the Aug. 25 premiere of its Big Break reboot after Golf Galaxy asked to have its branding removed.

Callaway Golf said Thursday it has cut ties with Good Good, the YouTube golf channel it partnered with on a co-branded driver, and will donate $1 million to groups that combat violence against women. The move follows six days of backlash to a now-deleted advertisement for the collaboration.

What was in the ad that triggered the split?

The commercial, posted Aug. 21 to promote a Callaway Quantum driver made with Good Good, showed the group's Garrett Clark running toward fellow creator Alexis Miestowski as she reached for the club in his bag. Clark pushed her to the ground and said, "Do not touch my new driver." Both companies pulled the ad within days as criticism spread across social media, but it continued to circulate.

What did Callaway say in ending the deal?

In a statement, Callaway said it had completed a review of the ad and concluded its "content review process was not comprehensive enough." The company said it has since strengthened its approval procedures and taken unspecified internal corrective action.

"We sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt, disappointed, or offended by this incident."

Beyond the $1 million pledge, Callaway said the money is meant to "support organizations working to prevent violence against women, provide resources to survivors, and advance education and awareness efforts." The company did not name specific recipient organizations or a timeline for the donation.

How has retail responded?

Dick's Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy removed Good Good merchandise from their stores and websites in the days after the ad surfaced, and PGA Tour Superstore followed with the same move. Golf Galaxy had also been lined up as presenting sponsor of Golf Channel's Big Break reboot, a series produced with Good Good, but the network pushed back the Aug. 25 premiere after Golf Galaxy asked for its branding to be stripped from the show.

Good Good, founded in 2020, has grown to more than 2 million YouTube subscribers and remains the title sponsor of a new FedEx Cup Fall event scheduled for Nov. 12-15 at Omni Barton Creek Resort in Austin, Texas. The PGA Tour has not announced whether that sponsorship will continue.
