How Long Pro Golf Tournaments Last, From 3 Days to 2 Weeks

Most professional golf tournaments run four days, but not all of them, and the exceptions are common enough that assuming four days is the wrong bet more often than golf fans expect.

What is the standard tournament format?

A full-field PGA Tour or LPGA Tour week is 72 holes of stroke play across four rounds, one per day from Thursday to Sunday. Total strokes across all four rounds decide the winner. Fields typically start in threesomes off the first and 10th tees in morning and afternoon waves, then flip those tee times for the second round so every player gets one early start and one late one before the weekend.

When is the cut, and who plays the weekend?

The cut falls after 36 holes, on Friday. The PGA Tour's standard line keeps the top 65 players and ties; everyone below it misses the weekend and earns no prize money. Some limited-field events use a smaller cut number, and a handful of tournaments -- including the 30-player Tour Championship that closes the FedExCup Playoffs -- do not cut at all, meaning every player in the field plays all four rounds and gets paid. An older rule that let players within 10 strokes of the lead survive a missed cut has largely disappeared from tour rulebooks in favor of a single numerical line.

Why do some tours play only three days?

PGA Tour Champions and LIV Golf each play 54 holes over three days with no cut, so every entrant plays every round. Smaller fields make a cut unnecessary, and three rounds fits a tighter broadcast window than four. LIV also uses a shotgun start, sending all groups off simultaneously from different holes rather than sequencing tee times, which compresses an entire round into one block.

Why does a single round take nearly five hours?

The Rules of Golf recommend, under Rule 5.6b, that a player make a stroke within roughly 40 seconds once it is genuinely their turn. Even so, tour rounds regularly run four and a half to five and a half hours. With 144 players grouped in threes and sent out in waves, every par 3 becomes a bottleneck, and one slow group backs up the entire field behind it. The gap between a five-hour tour round and a sub-four-hour recreational round comes down to field size and stakes rather than any single player dawdling.

Why do tournaments sometimes finish on Monday?

Weather is the usual reason a four-day event becomes a five-day one. Lightning halts play immediately for safety, heavy rain can leave greens unable to hold a shot, and darkness ends a day regardless of how much golf remains. Play resumes exactly where it stopped rather than restarting, so a long weather delay early in the week pushes every following round back and can force the tournament to finish Monday. In rare cases organizers have trimmed an event to 54 holes when a fourth round became impossible.

Tournament length is really a question of holes and cuts, not days on a calendar.

What changes with the 2028 Tour Championship?

Starting in 2028, the Tour Championship drops 72-hole stroke play for a match play postseason spread across two weeks. The first week is a round-robin group stage with 32 players split into eight four-man groups, with the top two from each group advancing. The second week is a 16-player single-elimination bracket that ends in an 18-hole championship match, making it by far the longest event on the calendar.
