Yuna Nishimura won her first LPGA Tour title on Sunday, cruising to a five-shot victory at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship while tying the tournament's scoring record at 21-under par. In her bag was the Callaway Quantum Mini Spinner, a 7-wood that picked up its first win on a major professional tour less than three months after release.
What role did Nishimura play in the club's design?
Nishimura asked Callaway's R&D team for a club with more spin and a steeper landing angle to help stop long approach shots into par 3s and 4s, according to the company. She said the finished 21-degree Mini Spinner gave her a jump of roughly 600 to 700 rpm in spin and a higher peak flight that produced the stopping power she wanted on firm greens.
"It delivers everything I'm looking for in a club," Nishimura said of the Mini Spinner after her win.
How is the Mini Spinner built?
Callaway built the Mini Spinner around a lightweight carbon sole that repositions mass higher in the clubhead, paired with what the company calls an AI-optimized, high-spin face. The 7-wood's shaft measures 0.75 inches shorter than Callaway's standard Quantum Max 7-wood, a change the company says promotes center contact and a steeper angle of attack. Independent testing has found the club produces noticeably more ball speed, spin and launch than a comparable long iron.
The Mini Spinner line launched in a handful of lofts at the end of July and has already become the top-selling fairway wood in Japan.
