Trip Kuehne says he has never watched the replay of his 36-hole final against Tiger Woods at the 1994 U.S. Amateur, telling GOLF's Subpar podcast he can still recall the day in detail without it.
What happened in the 1994 U.S. Amateur final?
At TPC Sawgrass, with his father on the bag, Kuehne made seven birdies in his first 13 holes to build a 6-up lead over Woods, then 18 to Kuehne's 22. Woods rallied to win the match, the first of three consecutive U.S. Amateur titles he would collect. Kuehne points to three moments he'd change: dozing off in the locker room between rounds, a mis-clubbing after an exchange with his father that led to a bogey, and a poorly played layup on the par-5 9th that put him in a bunker for another bogey.
How well did Kuehne and Woods know each other?
The two were already close by 1994. Woods and his father, Earl, sometimes stayed with the Kuehne family while traveling to tournaments, and Woods once caddied for Kuehne at the Canon Cup, the amateur team event now known as the Wyndham Cup. "I was probably the only person in the world he caddied for," Kuehne said.
What did Kuehne do after that loss?
Kuehne remained an amateur, built a career in finance, played on three U.S. Walker Cup teams and earned a start in the 2008 Masters by winning the 2007 U.S. Mid-Amateur at Bandon Dunes. Woods, of course, turned pro the following year and went on to become the biggest name in the sport's history.
