Angel Yin Confirms Solheim Cup Spot After Health Scare

Angel Yin will be part of Angela Stanford's 12-player U.S. team at the 20th Solheim Cup, the American told Golfweek, ending uncertainty over her availability after a two-month illness. Yin qualified No. 2 on the U.S. points list and will make her fourth Solheim Cup appearance.

What happened to Angel Yin?

Yin's health problems began June 25 after the first round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Hazeltine National, when stomach pain and nausea sent her to a Minnesota emergency room. She returned to the course the next morning but was readmitted to the hospital and stayed for six days before flying home to Florida. She lost 35 pounds during the ordeal and has kept her diet limited to water, rice, boiled chicken, fruit and cooked vegetables. Yin has not disclosed a specific diagnosis but said she is now pain-free.

How did her comeback go?

Yin's first start since the withdrawal came last week at the FM Championship at TPC Boston, where she shot 81-76 and did not make a birdie. She called the improvement from the first round to the second "immense" for where her game stood. Yin owns a 5-3-1 record across three prior Solheim Cups and was a captain's pick for the U.S. team in 2017 and 2023.

What is left of the rust?

Yin said her driver distance returned during her week in Boston, though her 4-iron and 5-iron remain roughly 10 yards shorter than normal. She left the tournament for California to keep practicing before flying to Atlanta on Saturday to join the rest of the U.S. team ahead of departure for the Netherlands.

What happens next?

The Solheim Cup runs Sept. 11-13 at Bernardus Golf, with the U.S. defending the trophy against Europe. Under Solheim Cup rules, Stanford must also designate two alternates alongside her 12-player roster.
